OBJ Narrates How He Converted Squash Court To A Church



Previous president of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, on Sunday, uncovered interestingly how and why he changed over the squash court in Aso Rock Villa into a place of worship. 

Today, the church, prevalently known as Villa Chapel, has turned into a Mecca of sorts to senior government authorities and other people who worship there as a ploy to have simple access to either the president or VP. 

Actually, some presidential assistants make cool cash from lobbyists who at times pay millions as kickbacks just to have access to the president or his vice.

Talking amid the maiden service at First Baptist Church, Garki, Abuja, Obasanjo said when he arrived Abuja as president in 1999, he needed to be a regular member of the congregation, which he really began doing. 

Sadly, he said every time he went to worship at the church, there was an excessive amount of security checks, which created so much interruption for other church users.

"I need to let you know what this congregation had done unwittingly for the country. When I came to Abuja, I imagined that why would it be a good idea for me to build up a congregation in the seat of government? 

"I ought to rather worship God in a position of love simply like others. What's more, my aim was to come here each Sunday. 

" I did it for some time, including bringing President Bill Clinton, to worship here with you. Yet, then, I found that each Sunday, when I was coming, the security will accompany me and I trust everyone was put under pressure and I felt why should I cause uneasiness to other individuals? 

"I didn't get to be president to cause pain to other individuals. I got to be president to make life more flexible for individuals," Obasanjo clarified. 

Thus, the previous president, who praised the Senior Pastor of the Church, Reverend (Dr) Israel Adelani Akanji, who is likewise administrator of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), North Central Zone, for lecturing great sermon, said he then chose to start to worship at the Villa. 

"So I started to utilize the squash court. Amid the week, I will play squash there and on Sunday, I transformed it into a chapel.
