Trader nabbed for defiling neighbour’s daughter

Daily Post reported that the Lagos State Police Command has apprehended a 27-year-old trader, Lucky Bassey, for allegedly raping his neighbour’s daughter, in the Bariga area of the State.

Bassey, who resides in the same house with the victim on Akilo Street, Bariga area of the State was said to have forcefully had his way on the 12-year-old while she was using the toilet on Monday.

DAILY POST gathered that the victim’s mother noticed that she could not walk properly after living the convenience and on interrogation, the 12-year-old disclosed that she was defiled by Bassey who forged the door of the toilet open before taking advantage of her.

The case was subsequently reported at the Bariga Police Division and the 27-year-old was rounded up.

While recounting her ordeal to the police, the primary six pupil, said Bassey had defiled her while standing, adding that he threatened to deal with her if she disclosed it to anybody.

She averred, “I was in the toilet on Monday, May 25, around 8pm, when I heard a knock on the door. I told the person at the other side that I was using the toilet. But brother Bassey forced the door open and closed my mouth to stop me from shouting.

“We were both standing when he raped me. He said I should not tell my mother about it or he would deal with me.”

The mother of the victim on her part said she noticed that her daughter could not walk properly after leaving the toilet, adding that this made her to confront the 12-year-old who later disclosed what happened.

“I called her and asked what happened to her. She told me that Bassey raped her,” she noted.

The victim’s mother further stated that the girl bled for a week and the matter was lodged at the police station, leading to the arrest of Bassey.

The 12-year-old was said to have been taken to a general hospital in the state where she was treated before the bleeding stopped.

According to the victim’s mother, the suspects family members have been begging for forgiveness.

She averred, “We are both from the same village in Calabar, Akwa Ibom State. We also live in the same compound in Lagos. His people have been asking us to forgive him. Even our landlady has also begged me. But I have told them it was no longer within my power and that the government has taken over the case. I don’t know why it will be my daughter of all people that he will do this to when there are many prostitutes out there that he can have sex with.”

Bassey, however, denied the allegation saying, “I don’t know what she is talking about because on that day, I did not enter the toilet as she claimed and I did not rape her.”

The incident was confirmed by the Police Public Relations Officers, Kenneth Nwosu.

“We arrested the suspect and he has been remanded in the Ikoyi Prison after being charged to court,” Nwosu stated.
